Hasbi Allah in the Holy Quran

The word ‘Hasbi & Allah’ often appears in the Holy Quran. However, we are specifically talking about the dua ‘Hasbi Allah.’

The complete Hasbi Allah dua is seen in Surah At-Tawbah Verse 129: But if they turn away, then say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. In Him I put my trust. And He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.”

The word appears in a slightly different spelling in the same Surah, but the meaning is the same. At-Tawbah Verse 59, If only they had been content with what Allah and His Messenger had given them and said, “Allah is sufficient for us! Allah will grant us out of His bounty, and so will His Messenger. To Allah ˹alone˺ we turn with hope.”

In Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 39, the word appears with slightly different pronunciation and spelling, but the meaning is the same.

That is His way with˺ those ˹prophets˺ who deliver the messages of Allah, and consider Him, and none but Allah. And sufficient is Allah as a ˹vigilant˺ Reckoner.

In Surah Al-Anfal, the Quran talks about the non-believers and orders the Prophet to respond immediately if he sees a sign of betrayal. The surah further says to prepare your military for the enemies, and if they ask for peace, make peace. However, Allah knows if their intentions are of betrayal, and Allah is sufficient for you in that case and will help you like always.

Here is the complete verse and the use of Hasbi Allah, But if their intention is only to deceive you, then Allah is certainly sufficient for you. He is the One Who has supported you with His help and with the believers. — Surah Al-Anfal Verse 62

Hasbi Allah in Hadith

Various Hadiths describe the powers of Hasbi Allah, Hasbi Allah Wa Ni’mal Wakeel, and here are a few of them listed.

When the non-believers informed the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and his followers about the huge army of non-believers and their plans to attack Muslims, the Prophet replied with Hasbi Allah Wa Ni’mal Wakeel. Here is the complete translation of this Hadith.

‘Allah is Sufficient for us, and He Is the Best Disposer of affairs,” was said by Abraham when he was thrown into the fire, and it was said by Muhammad when they (i.e. hypocrites) said, “A great army is gathering against you, therefore, fear them,” but it only increased their faith, and they said: “Allah is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer (of affairs, for us).” — Sahih al-Bukhari 4563

The power of Hasbi Allah can be observed from this Hadith in which a mother is nursing her kid. A rider passed by, and she prayed to make my kid like him, the kid stopped and replied Allah! don’t make me like him.

She then went to the market and saw a woman being dragged by men, convicted of illegal sex. She prayed don’t make my kid like her, the kid replied, make me like her because she was accused wrongly and said ‘Allah is sufficient for me’. Here is the complete Hadith translation.

Narrated by Abu Huraira (RA), That he heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, “While a lady was nursing her child, a rider passed by and she said, ‘O Allah! Don’t let my child die till he becomes like this (rider).’ The child said, ‘O Allah! Don’t make me like him,’ and then returned to her breast (sucking it). (After a while) they passed by a lady who was being pulled and teased (by the people). The child’s mother said, ‘O Allah! Do not make my child like her.’ The child said, ‘O Allah! Make me like her.’ Then he said, ‘As for the rider, he is an infidel, while the lady is accused of illegal sexual intercourse (falsely) and she says: Allah is sufficient for me (He knows the truth). — Sahih al-Bukhari 3466

When the non-believers decided to kill Prophet Abraham (PBUH), they started a fire and let it burn for days until it became a huge fire. They threw Prophet Abraham (PBUH) in it, believing he will burn to ashes. However, Abraham recited this dua (Hasbi Allah Wa Ni’mal Wakeel) before he was thrown into the fire, and the fire vanished.

Here is the exact translation of this Hadith, Narrated by Ibn Abbas: The last statement of Abraham when he was thrown into the fire was:–“Allah is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer (of affairs for us).” — Sahih al-Bukhari Volume 6, Book 60, Hadith 87
