Why do Muslims pray Taraweeh in Ramadan?
The optional prayer Taraweeh has several benefits and rewards. Almost 65% of Muslims pray the Taraweeh prayer in Ramadan. Why? Because Ramadan is the month of blessings, and with extra efforts, Muslims try to reap as many of Allah’s blessings as possible. You can also recite Astaghfirullah and offer the Tahajjud dua with prayer.
Hadith: Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “He who observes optional prayer (Tarawih prayers) throughout Ramadan, out of sincerity of Faith and in the hope of earning reward will have his past sins pardoned.” —Riyad as-Salihin 1187
Does Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) pray Taraweeh?
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) didn’t pray Taraweeh Salah for more than two days in a row and clarified that he intentionally did that. However, after the Holy Prophet (PBUH) ‘s death, muslims started offering Taraweeh prayer in groups.
Hadith: Narrated by Aishah (RA): The Prophet (PBUH) once offered (tarawih) prayer in the mosque, and the people also prayed along with him. He then prayed on the following night, and the people gathered in large numbers. They gathered on the third night too, but the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) did not come out to them. When the morning came, he said: I witnessed what you did, and nothing prevented me from coming out to you except that I feared that this (prayer) might be prescribed to you. That was in Ramadan. —Sunan Abi Dawud 1373
Since then, Muslims have offered Taraweeh in groups in mosques. The Imam recites the Holy Quran, and the people behind him listen to him. They observe Taraweeh Salah with two rakats and recite dua for Taraweeh after four rakat are completed. There are other dua for Ramadan that you should recite to gain Allah’s mercy.
What is the number of Taraweeh Rakat?
The exact number of Taraweeh Rakat is disputed among Muslims. There are various claims on the number of Taraweeh Rakat, which is largely divided into two main groups. The first group says that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) prayed eight rakat Taraweeh, while the second group states the number as 20.
Our reaction to this issue is simple. You should follow the Hadith and Quran or ask a Mufti.

Was Taraweeh started by Umar (RA)?
It is widely believed in the Muslim world that Khalif Umar (RA) was the one who gathered Muslims in a group and started the Salat al Taraweeh, which we can see today. However, this is not true, and the scene is copied from a Daif Hadith.
Hadith: Narrated Ubayy ibn Ka’b: Al-Hasan reported: Umar ibn al-Khattab gathered the people (in tarawih prayer) behind Ubayy ibn Ka’b (who led them). He used to lead them for twenty days (during Ramadan, and would not recite the supplication except in the second half of it (i.e. Ramadan). When the last ten days remained, he kept away from them, and prayed in his house. They used to say: Ubayy ran away. Abu Dawud said: This tradition shows that whatever has been reported about the recitation of the supplication is not tenable. Moreover, these two traditions from Ubayy b. Ka’b indicate that another tradition which tells that the Prophet (PBUH) recited the supplication in the witr is weak. —Sunan Abi Dawud 1429
What is the best time to offer Salat al Taraweeh and Dua for Taraweeh?
The best time to offer Taraweeh starts after the Isha prayer, which is after one-third of the night has passed. However the best time to offer Taraweeh prayer is the complete night from Isha to Fajr.
Hadith: Nu’aim bin Ziyad Abu Talhah said: “I heard An-Nu’man bin Bashir on the minbar in Hims saying: “We prayed Qiyam with the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) during Ramadan on the night of the twenty-third until one-third of the night had passed, then we prayed Qiyam with him on the night of the twenty-fifth until one-half of the night had passed, then we prayed Qiyam with him on the night of the twenty-seventh until we thought that we would miss Al-Falah- that is what they used to call suhur.” —Sunan an-Nasa’i 1606
