Dua for Ramadan

Ramadan is the most blessed month in Islam for several reasons. The most prominent reason is the first revelation of the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on the Night of Qadr.

It was in the month of Ramadan that the Quran was revealed as guidance for mankind, clear messages giving guidance and distinguishing between right and wrong. —Surah al-Baqarah Verse 185

This is why Muslims fast during Ramadan and why mosques are filled with worshippers. Giving charity is another essential activity associated with this blessed month, as the rewards are multiplied.

We will also discuss the duas (prayers) for Ramadan that a Muslim should memorize before the month begins and when and where they should be recited.

Dua for Ramadan

In Islam, every month starts with the moon sighting. Therefore, the month of Ramadan starts with the moon sighting, and the gates of blessings are opened. Thousands of Muslims worldwide go to high places to see the Ramadan moon and recite a special publication while gazing at it.

Here is the list of Dua for Ramadan you should recite.

  • Dua for seeing the Ramadan Moon
  • Dua for Taraweeh
  • Dua after Witr
  • Dua for observing fast
  • Dua for breaking fast
  • Others

Dua for Ramadan Moon Sighting

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) recited this dua, seeing Ramadan crescent.

‏اللهم أهله علينا بالأمن والإيمان والسلامة والإسلام، ربي وربك الله، هلال رشد وخير

Englisht transliteration: Allahumma ahillahu ‘alaina bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-Islam, Rabbi wa Rabbuk-Allah, Hilalu rushdin wa khairin.

English translation: O Allah, let this moon appear to us with security and Iman, with safety and Islam. (O moon!) Your Rubb and mine is Allah. May this moon bring guidance and good.

Hadith: Bilal bin Yahya bin Talhah bin `Ubaidullah narrated : from his father, from his grandfather Talhah bin `Ubaidullah that when the Prophet (PBUH) would see a crescent moon, he would say: Allāhumma ahlilhu `alainā bil-yumni wal-Īmān, was-salāmati wal-Islām, rabbī wa rabbuk Allāh. — Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3451

Explanation: We should pray this dua at the beginning of the Holy month, Ramadan, or another month. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) used to pray this supplication when he saw the first month of the month.

In this dua for Ramadan, we ask Allah to guide us throughout the month, secure our religion, and allow us to do all good deeds.

Taraweeh Dua for Ramadan

We have checked several Hadiths and couldn’t find a dua associated with the Taraweeh Salah. However, the importance of Taraweeh can be calculated from this Hadith.

Hadith: Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “He who observes optional prayer (Tarawih prayers) throughout Ramadan, out of sincerity of Faith and in the hope of earning reward, will have his past sins pardoned.” —Riyad as-Saliheen 1187

The dua after completing four rakats of Taraweeh prayer is practiced by millions of Muslims. Here is the supplication they use,

English transliteration: Subhana Dhil-Mulki wal-Malakoot. Subhana Dhil-Izzati wal-Azhamati wal-Haybati wal-Qudrati wal-Kibriyai wal-Jabaroot. Subhanal-Malikil-Hayyil-Ladhi Laa Yanaamu wa Laa Yamoot. Subboohun Quddoosun Rabbuna wa Rabbul-Malaikati war-Rooh. Allahumma ajirna minan-naar, Ya Mujeer, Ya Mujeer, Ya Mujeer.

English translation: Glory be to the One who has all power and control. Glory be to the One who possesses honor, greatness, awe, power, majesty, and might. Glory be to the Eternal King who never sleeps and never dies. He is Perfect and Holy, our Lord and the Lord of the angels and the souls. O Allah, protect us from the fire (of Hell), O Protector, O Protector, O Protector.

Note: This Taraweeh dua for Ramadan is widely recited by Muslims around the world. We were unable to trace its origins in the Hadiths and the Holy Quran. Don’t forget to recite the dua to enter the Masjid during Ramadan.

English translation: I intend to keep the fast for tomorrow in the month of Ramadan

Explanation: Multiple websites have mentioned this dua to be present in Suana Abi Dawud. However, we have checked the complete fasting section in Abi Dawud, and couldn’t find this supplication.

Avoid Fights during Ramadan and Fasting

We know how it feels to have an empty stomach and thirsty throat. Due to this, many Muslims are in a bad mood and often fight with their brother Muslims over small issues. However, one should remember that the fast he has observed is to invoke Allah’s blessings, and fidgeting while fasting will reduce the rewards.

Therefore a Muslim must avoid fights and qureels and stay humble during Ramadan. Here is a dua to stay humble when fasting.

إني صائمٌ ، إني صائمٌ

English transliteration: Innī ṣā’im, Innī ṣā’im.

English translation: I am fasting, I am fasting.
