Dua for Waking Up English transliteration: Alhamdu lillahi alladhi ‘aafani fi jasadi, wa radda ‘alayya ruhi, wa adhina li bidhikrihi. —Hisn al-Muslim 3

Here is the Dua for waking up from sleep in Tirmidhi:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي عَافَانِي فِي جَسَدِي وَرَدَّ عَلَىَّ رُوحِي وَأَذِنَ لِي بِذِكْرِهِ

When he lies down, let him say: Bismika rabbī waḍa`tu janbī wa bika arfa`uhu, fa’in amsakta nafsī farḥamhā wa in arsaltahā faḥfaẓhā bimā taḥfaẓu bihī `ibādakaṣ-ṣāliḥīn’ And when he awakens, let him say: Al-ḥamdulillāh alladhī `āfānī fī jasadī wa radda `alayya rūḥī wa adhina lī bidhikrih.’” —Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3401
Why should we recite dua to wake up and sleep?
A dua is a special supplication to Allah for his mercy and blessings. It is best to ask Allah’s forgiveness and gain his closeness.
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) recited the abovementioned duas; therefore, we should recite them. It is also mentioned in the Quran that we have to follow Allah and his Messenger. —Surah An-Nisa Verse 59
Another reason to recite dua after waking up and before sleeping is that we should start and end our day with the name of Allah. We should prove that we are loyal servants who start our day with the name of Allah and end it with it.
It is clearly mentioned that when you sleep, Shaytan ties three knots on your neck. When you wake up and recite the dua for waking up, the first knot is opened. When you get up and perform ablution, the second knot is opened. The third knot is opened when you observe prayer.
Hadith: It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: “The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: ‘At night Satan ties a rope in which there are three knots to the nape of the neck of anyone of you. If he wakes up and remembers Allah, one knot is untied. If he performs ablution, another knot is untied, and if he gets up to pray, all the knots are untied, so he wakes up energetic and cheerful, he has already earned something good. But if he does not do that, he wakes up bad-tempered, having earned nothing good.”—Sunan Ibn Majah 1329
Prayer after Waking Up
Muslims usually wake up at the time of Fajr Salah. Some of us who have a strong bond with Allah pray Tahajjud before observing Fajr Salah.
A Muslim should at least pray Fajr Salah before starting his day if he is not praying Tahajjud.
It was narrated that Salman said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying: ‘Whoever goes to the Morning prayer first thing in the morning, he goes out with the banner of faith but whoever goes out to the marketplace first thing in the morning, he goes out under the banner of Iblis (Satan).’ “—Sunan Ibn Majah 2234
A Muslim should pray Fajr in the mosque. That is becasue Allah will prepare food for all of those who went to pray the Salah of morning and evening. In another Hadith, the rewards of observing Salah in the mosque are mentioned. It is mentioned that a Salah in congregation is 25 times superior to a Salah performed by a single person at home. Therefore, we should try our best to pray every Salah in the mosque. Here is a guide on dua for entering a mosque.
Hadith: Abu Huraira reported God’s Messenger as saying, “If anyone goes out in the morning or in the evening to the mosque, God will prepare for him his food in paradise as often as he goes out in the morning or in the evening.” —Mishkat al-Masabih 698
Hadith: Narrated Ibn Al-Musaiyab: Abu Huraira said, “The Prophet (PBUH) said, ‘A prayer performed in congregation is twenty-five times more superior in reward to a prayer performed by a single person. The angels of the night and the angels of the day are assembled at the time of the Fajr (Morning) prayer.”
Abu Huraira added, “If you wish, you can recite:– ‘Verily! The recitation of the Qur’an in the early dawn (Morning prayer) is ever witnessed (attended by the angels of the day and the night).’ (Surah Al-Isra Verse 78) —Sahih al-Bukhari 4717
Hadith on Tahajjud: Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “The best month for observing Saum (fasting) next after Ramadan is the month of Allah, the Muharram; and the best Salat (prayer) next after the prescribed Salat is Salat at night (Tahajjud prayers).” —Riyad as-Salihin 1246
Waking up at Tahajjud and asking Allah whatever you want is the best thing a Muslim can do. We have created a guide on dua for success in life and hereafter, the best time to make this supplication is Tahajjud.
