Rain is considered Allah’s blessing and is widely welcomed not only by Muslims but also by everyone on this planet. It plays a crucial part in maintaining our echo system, growing crops, feeding animals, and reducing global warming.
In Islam, there are supplications to ask Allah for blessings, both general and specific. In this blog, we will go through the best dau for rain and its benefits. We will also discuss dua to stop rain and dua when it rains.
The Best Dua for Rain
Before we move forward with describing the dua for rain, let’s discuss a little bit about Allah’s blessing. Rain is created by Allah and and sent as a blessing for us, we should welcome rain and recite the dua for rain.
In the Quran, Allah says, It is Allah Who sends the winds, which then stir up ˹vapour, forming˺ clouds, which He then spreads out in the sky or piles up into masses as He wills, from which you see rain come forth. Then as soon as He causes it to fall on whoever He wills of His servants, they rejoice. —Surah Ar-Rum Verse 48
Here is the best Dua for Rain as per Hadith:
اَللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا, اَللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا, اَللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا
Dua for Rain English transliteration: Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna. — Hisn al-Muslim 170
English translation: O Allah! Bless us with rain. O Allah! Bless us with rain. O Allah! Bless us with rain!
Hadith: Narrated Anas (RA): The Prophet (PBUH) was delivering the Khutbah (religious talk, sermon) while standing on a Friday when a man came into the mosque and said, “O Messenger of Allah! The livestock have died and the roads are cut off, so supplicate Allah to send us down rain.“ Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) raised his hands and then said, “O Allah! send us down rain, O Allah! send us down rain, O Allah! send us down rain.” —Book 2, Hadith 448
Explanation: This Hadith is self explanatory. It was maybe summers day when the Holy Prophet was delivering the Khutba for Friday prayer, when a man entered the mosque and informed the Porphet (PBUH) about the heat and the condition of livestock which are near to death.
The Holy Prophet (PBUH), upon hearing this, raised both his hands and prayed to Allah for rain. He recited this supplication for rain “اَللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا” three times, and it started raining heavily. It rained so hard for days that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) had to make another supplication to Allah to stop the rain.
Dua to Stop Rain
English translation: O Allah! Round about us and not on us. O Allah!’ On the plateaus, on the mountains, on the hills, in the valleys and on the places where trees grow.
Hadith: Narrated Sharik: Anas bin Malik said, “A person entered the Mosque on a Friday through the gate facing the Daril- Qada’ and Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) was standing delivering the Khutba (sermon). The man stood in front of Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) and said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (PBUH), livestock are dying and the roads are cut off; please pray to Allah for rain.’ So Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) raised both his hands and said, ‘O Allah! Bless us with rain. O Allah! Bless us with rain. O Allah! Bless us with rain!” Anas added, “By Allah, there were no clouds in the sky and there was no house or building between us and the mountain of Sila’. Then a big cloud like a shield appeared from behind it (i.e. Silas Mountain) and when it came in the middle of the sky, it spread and then rained. By Allah! We could not see the sun for a week.
The next Friday, a person entered through the same gate and Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) was delivering the Friday Khutba and the man stood in front of him and said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (PBUH)! The livestock are dying and the roads are cut off; Please pray to Allah to withhold rain.‘ ” Anas added, “Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) raised both his hands and said, ‘O Allah! Round about us and not on us. O Allah!’ On the plateaus, on the mountains, on the hills, in the valleys and on the places where trees grow.’ ” Anas added, “The rain stopped and we came out, walking in the sun.” Sharik asked Anas whether it was the same person who had asked for rain the previous Friday. Anas replied that he did not know. —Sahih al-Bukhari 1014
Explanation: It is mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) raised both his hands to make the supplication stop the rain. Otherwise, the livestock would have died. This shows the power of dua for rain and how it can be a blessing and curse.
