اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِنِي فِيمَنْ هَدَيْتَ وَعَافِنِي فِيمَنْ عَافَيْتَ وَتَوَلَّنِي فِيمَنْ تَوَلَّيْتَ وَبَارِكْ لِي فِيمَا أَعْطَيْتَ وَقِنِي شَرَّ مَا قَضَيْتَ إِنَّكَ تَقْضِي وَلاَ يُقْضَى عَلَيْكَ وَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَذِلُّ مَنْ وَالَيْتَ وَلاَ يَعِزُّ مَنْ عَادَيْتَ تَبَارَكْتَ رَبَّنَا وَتَعَالَيْتَ

Dua e Qunoot English transliteration: Allahumma ihdinee feeman hadayt, wa ‘aafinee feeman ‘aafayt, wa tawallanee feeman tawallayt, wa baarik lee feema a‘atayt, wa qinee sharra ma qadhayt, innaka taqdee wa laa yuqdaa ‘alayk, wa innahu laa yadhillu man waalayt, wa laa ya’izzu man ‘aadayt, tabaarakta Rabbanaa wa ta‘aalayt.

Dua e Qunoot English translation: O Allah, guide me among those Thou hast guided, grant me security among those Thou hast granted security, take me into Thy charge among those Thou hast taken into Thy charge, bless me in what Thou hast given, guard me from the evil of what Thou hast decreed, for Thou dost decree, and nothing is decreed for Thee. He whom Thou befriendest is not humbled. Blessed and Exalted art Thou, our Lord.

Hadith on Dua e Qunoot: Narrated Al-Hasan ibn Ali: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) taught me some words that I say during the witr. (The version of Ibn Jawwas has: I say them in the supplication of the witr.) They were: “O Allah, guide me among those Thou hast guided, grant me security among those Thou hast granted security, take me into Thy charge among those Thou hast taken into Thy charge, bless me in what Thou hast given, guard me from the evil of what Thou hast decreed, for Thou dost decree, and nothing is decreed for Thee. He whom Thou befriendest is not humbled. Blessed and Exalted art Thou, our Lord.” — (Sunan Abi Dawud 1425, Sunan an-Nasa’i 1746)

Explanation: If you read the English translation of Dua e Qunoot, you can see that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) was asking for guidence, security, and guardianship from evil. As a Muslim we should also learn Dua e Qunoot and recite it in Witr prayer.

Dua e Qunoot 2 (Hanfi)

You will be surprised to know that we have two different Qunoot duas in Islam and Muslims are divided upon which should we recite. The Hanfi school of thouhgt clasify the below mentioned Dua e Qunoot as the correct dua.

اللّهُـمَّ إِيّـاكَ نعْـبُدْ، وَلَـكَ نُصَلّـي وَنَسْـجُد، وَإِلَـيْكَ نَسْـعى وَنَحْـفِد، نَـرْجو رَحْمَـتَك، وَنَخْشـى عَـذابَك، إِنَّ عَـذابَكَ بالكـافرين ملْحَـق. اللّهُـمَّ إِنّا نَسْتَعـينُكَ وَنَسْتَـغْفِرُك، وَنُثْـنـي عَلَـيْك الخَـيْرَ، وَلا نَكْـفُرُك، وَنُـؤْمِنُ بِك، وَنَخْـضَعُ لَكَ وَنَخْـلَعُ مَنْ يَكْـفرُك

English transliteration: Allāhumma iyyāka na`bud, wa laka nuṣallī wa nasjud, wa ilayka nas`ā wa naḥfid, narjū raḥmatak, wa nakhshā `adhābak, inna `adhābaka bilkāfirīna mulḥaq. Allāhumma innā nasta`īnuk, wa nastaghfiruk, wa nuthnī `alaykal-khayr, wa lā nakfuruk, wa nu’minu bik, wa nakhḍa`u lak, wa nakhla`u man yakfuruk. —Hisn al-Muslim 118

English translation: O Allah, You alone do we worship, and to You we pray and bow down prostrate. To You we hasten to worship and to serve. Our hope is for Your mercy, and we fear Your punishment. Surely, Your punishment of the disbelievers is at hand. O Allah, we seek Your help and Your forgiveness, and we praise You beneficently. We do not deny You and we believe in You. We surrender to You and renounce whoever disbelieves in You.

Refrence: The Dua e Qunoot is mentioned in As-Sunan Al-Kubra and graded authentic by Al-Bayhaqi. Al-Albani said in ‘Irwa’ul-GhaliL 2/170 that its chain is authentic as a statement of ‘Umar.

Which Dua e Qunoot is Authentic?

The basic idea of Dua e Qunoot is to ask Allah for blessings and forgiveness. You can recite any of the above-mentioned Dua e Qunoot. If you follow the Hanfi school of thought then recite Allāhumma iyyāka na`bud.

If you follow another school of thought, then recite ‘Allahumma ihdinee feeman hadayt.’

Which Dua e Qunoot is correct and authentic?

Both Dua e Qunoot mentioned above are correct. However, if you look into the Hadiths, you will find the first one in several books. We would recommend you to recite Allahumma ihdinee feeman hadayt in the Witr Salah.

When to recite Dua e Qunoot?

Hadiths clearly show that Dua e Qunoot should be recited in Witr Salah, the last rakat, to be precise. However, some Hadiths point towards the recitation of Qunoot Dua in Fajar and Magribh Salah.

Hadith: It was narrated from Ubayy bin Ka’b that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to pray Witr, and he would recite Qunut before Ruku’. —Sunan Ibn Majah 1182

From this Hadith, we can surely say that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) recited Dua e Qunoot in the Witr Salah, and we should follow him by doing the same.

Dua e Qunoot after Fajar & Magrib

Various Hadiths are saying that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) used to recite Dua e Qunoot in the morning and evening prayer. We dont know why the Muslim ummah have left reciting Dua e Qunoot in Fajr and Magrib.

Hadith: Narrated Anas: The Qunut used to be recited in the Maghrib and the Fajr prayers. — Sahih al-Bukhari 1004

Hadith: Al-Bari’ reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) observed Qunut in the dawn and evening (prayers). — Sahih Muslim 678b

What can I say instead of Dua e Qunoot?

There are different comments and ideas on this question. We advise you to ask your local Mufti. However, what we have heard is you can recite Allāhumma Rabbanā Ātinā Fi al-Dunyā Ĥasanah Wa Fi al-Ākhirati Ĥasanah Wa Qinā ‘AdhābaNār’. 

Reciting Dua e Qunoot amplifies the rewards and blessings. Therefore, you must learn it and recite it in Salah. You can also read Dua e Qunoot on paper until you memorize it.

Is Dua e Qunoot mentioned in the Holy Quran?

We searched every Surah of the Holy Quran and couldn’t find Dua e Qunoot in it. Dua e Qunoot is not mentioned in the Holy Quran and only available in Hadiths.
