Dua for Breaking Fast

Fasting is one of the most important practices in Islam, and it is done to gain Allah’s mercy and blessings. Most Muslims fast during the whole month of Ramadan and do good deeds. However, some Muslims fast on other occasions, like on 10 Muharram and during Shawaal.

Most Muslims believe there is only one dua for breaking fast in Ramadan and other months. This blog will focus on the dua for breaking fast in Ramadan and other months. We will also mention other duas that can be beneficial during Ramadan.

Duas for breaking fast

If you are a Muslim who practices Islam, then you must know that the dua to break fast during Ramadan is ‘Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa ala rizq-ika-aftartu.’ Most Muslims use this dua to breakfast in Ramadan and other months. However, there are a few more duas prescribed by the Holy Prophet.

Dua for breaking fast in English

Here is the English transliteration for the Dua for breaking fast.

It is clear from the Hadith that our Holy Prophet has clearly said, “Allahumma inni laka sumti wa ala rizq-ika-aftartu” before breaking fast, and we should follow him.

2nd Dua for breaking fast

Most people don’t study the Book of Hadits and are therefore unaware that there is a second dua that our Holy Prophet (PBUH) used to recite when breaking fast.

Here is the second dua for breaking fast: Dhahaba al-zama’ wa abtalat al-‘urooq wa thabata al-ajr in sha Allaah.

2nd Dua to break fast in Hadiths

Marwan ibn Salim al-Muqaffa said, “I saw Ibn Umar holding his beard with his hand and cutting what exceeded the handful of it. He (Ibn Umar) said that the Prophet (PBUH) said when he broke his fast: (ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ) Thirst has gone, the arteries are moist, and the reward is sure, if Allah wills.” Here is a deeper explanation of Zahabaz Zamau Wabtallatil.

What is the dua for breaking fast in Ramadan?

We have mentioned two duas for breaking fast. You can recite any of the above-mentioned dua to break your fast during Ramadan. Generally, Muslims use ‘Allahumma inni laka sumti wa ala rizq-ika-aftartu’ for breaking fast in the month of Ramadan.

What is the best moment to recite the dua for breaking fast?

As mentioned in the Holy Quran and Hadiths, Muslims should fast during Ramadan, and the fast time will be from dusk to dawn. The best moment to recite the dua for breaking fast is after you hear Adan-e-Magrib.

In Western countries, the number of Mosques is limited. Therefore, a Muslim must use the internet to find the correct Magrib time and then recite this dua. TV or radio can be a good alternative as they broadcast Ramadan’s transition, which will have Adan-e-Magrib and Dua for breakfast.

The time of Magrib or dusk depends on your country. Therefore, a Muslim in the United States can not break his fast listening to Indian or Pakistani TV channels. It would be best to say Alhamdulillah after breaking fast in Ramadan or other months.

What is the dua for fasting?

There is a dua for everything in Islam. Like the dua for breaking fast, there is a dua for observing fast. Most Muslims say, “Wa bisawmi ghadinn nawaiytu min shahri Ramadan” while observing fast in the holy month of Ramadan.

However, we have searched for this dua in several Hadiths and couldn’t find it. You can also observe fasting by saying Bismillah at dawn or the time of Fajar salat.

Dua for fasting with English translation and transliteration

Here is the dua for fasting, which Muslims widely practice: Wa bisawmi ghadinn nawaiytu min shahri Ramadan.

English translation: I intend to keep the fast for tomorrow in the month of Ramadan

Why are duas in Ramadan so important?

Ramadan is the most blessed month in Islam. The Holy Quran was completed in the month of Ramadan; the month is divided into three sections, starting from 10 days of blessings, ten days of forgiveness, and the last 10 or 9 days for escaping hell.

The hadiths mention the dua of a fasting person, that when he breaks his fast, he won’t be rejected.

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said, “There are three whose supplication is not rejected: The fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just leader, and the supplication of the oppressed person; Allah raises it up above the clouds and opens the gates of heaven to it. And the Lord says: ‘By My might, I shall surely aid you, even if it should be after a while.’”

There are many other aspects of this month, which we will discuss in a separate blog. However, if you want to learn about Ramadan and its significance, here is a blog on why Muslims fast during Ramadan.

Conclusion

So far, we have discussed the dua for breaking fast and the dua for observing it. We have given relevant references from the Hadith to back our argument and provide depth in our blog.

Other dua associated with Ramadan

Ramadan is the month of blessings. We have a long list of duas you should recite in Ramadan but we will mention only the top duas here.

Dua at the start of Ramadan

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) recited a dua after seeing the moon during Ramadan.

Bilal bin Yahya bin Talhah bin `Ubaidullah narrated: from his father, from his grandfather Talhah bin `Ubaidullah that when the Prophet (PBUH) would see a crescent moon, he would say: “(اللَّهُمَّ أَهْلِلْهُ عَلَيْنَا بِالْيُمْنِ وَالإِيمَانِ وَالسَّلاَمَةِ وَالإِسْلاَمِ رَبِّي وَرَبُّكَ اللَّهُ) O Allah, bring it over us with blessing and faith, and security and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah (Allāhumma ahlilhu `alainā bil-yumni wal-Īmān, was-salāmati wal-Islām, rabbī wa rabbuk Allāh).” — Jami at-Tirmidhi 3451

Dua for the person who provides you food for breaking fast (Iftar)

A person who provides food for another fasting person will get equal rewards. This is one of the best ways to reap the rewards, and we should organize food festivals for Muslims during Ramadan.

Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani narrated that The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Whoever provides the food for a fasting person to break his fast with, then for him is the same reward as his (the fasting person’s), without anything being diminished from the reward of the fasting person.”

Since you are on the receiving end, you must pray for the generous person providing food for the fasting Muslims. Here is the specific dua for this specific case.

Transliteration in English: Aftara ‘indakumus-saimun, wa akala ta’amakumul-abrar, wa sallat ‘alaikumul- mala’ikah

Translation in English: May the fasting (men) break their fast with you, the pious eat your food, and the angels pray for blessing on you.

Hadith

Anas ibn Malik said that The Prophet (PBUH) came to visit Sa’d ibn Ubaydah, brought bread and olive oil, and ate (them). Them). Then the Prophet (PBUH) said: (أَفْطَرَ عِنْدَكُمُ الصَّائِمُونَ وَأَكَلَ طَعَامَكُمُ الأَبْرَارُ وَصَلَّتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ) May the fasting (men) break their fast with you, and the pious eat your food, and the angels pray for blessing on you. — Sunan Abi Dawud 3854

Dua for the first ten days of Ramadan (1-10)

The first ten days of Ramadan, also known as the ‘first ashra; 1st half of three’, are filled with blessings and virtues. These are to ask Allah for rewards and virtues.

There is no dua mentioned in the Hadiths for this occasion. But we can recite the 3rd Kalma to ask Allah for his blessings or pray to Allah in our language.

Here is the dua for Ramadan’s first ashra:

يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغيثُ

English transliteration: Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum bi rehmatika astaghees

English translation: Oh Everliving, The Everlasting, I seek Your help through Your mercy.

Dua for the second ten days of Ramadan (11-20)

The second ashra is considered the best time to ask Allah’s forgiveness. A Muslim must ask Allah’s forgiveness in his language or recite the 5th Kalma—Astagfar. However, here is a more prominent dua for Ramadan 2nd Ashra.

English transliteration: Astagfirullaha rab-bi min kulli zambiyon wa-atoobuilaiyh

English translation: I seek forgiveness from Allah for all my sins and turn to Him.

Dua for the last days of Ramadan (21-29/30)

The third and last ten days of Ramadan are considered the most important and sacred. In these 10 days, the Holy Quran was completed and brought to mankind as the correct way to live life. In the last ten days of Ramadan, we also have the most powerful night, the Night of Qadr.

The last nine or ten days are best known as the time to ask Allah’s forgiveness, especially from Hell. A Muslim must ask Allah’s forgiveness in the last ten days and recite the 6th Kalma—Rad-e-kufr.

Here is the dua for the last ashra of Ramadan, popular among Muslims.

English transliteration: Allahumma Ajirni minan naar

English translation: O Allah, save me from the fire (Jahannam)

Dua for the Night of Qadr (Laylatul Qadr)

The Night of Qadr, or Laylatul Qadar, is the biggest and most blessed night in Islam. It is believed that the Night of Power occurred during the last ten days of Ramadan, specifically the 27th of Ramadan.

On the night of Qadr, Angle Jibrael came down to earth to reveal the first Verse of the Holy Quran to our Holy Prophet (PBUH), IQRA!

Muslims worldwide highly regard this night, perform charity, recite Allah Huma Inaka Afuwun, and pray till morning. Here is a more popular dua for the night of Qadr.

English transliteration: Allahumma innaka Afuwwun [Karimun ] tuhibbul `afwa fa`fu `annee

English translation: O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, [Generous,] You love pardon, so pardon me
