The literal translation of Takbir is Allah is the greatest. Takbir is one of the most important pillars of Islam, and Muslims find peace and security by saying Takbir.

What are the benefits of saying Takbir?

Takbir has several spiritual, emotional, and social benefits. Some of these are listed below.

Saying Takbir (Allahu Akbhar) reminds Muslims that Allah is the greatest and affirms his greatness over the challenges they are facing in this world. Here is the dua for difficult times, which can help you in hard times. Secondly, by reciting Takbir, you get closer to Allah, and your soul comes to peace.

Saying Allahu Akhbar can bring calm and comfort in times of difficulty. It serves as a reminder that Allah has the power to comfort you and bring you to ease. Here is the dua for anxiety and dua for ease.

Another benefit of saying Takbir is magnifying the gratitude towards Allah. We should always thank Allah for the blessings and mercy that he has bestowed upon us. Here is the best dua to thank Allah for everything.

Takbir also strengthens our faith in Allah and his plan. It also brings a common ground where all the Muslims of the world can come together without any doubts. The best part is Takbir is part of Salah as we start our Salah by saying Allahu Akhbar. Here is the dua after Salah and here is the dua for Jummah Mubarak.

Takbir helps give Muslims the true purpose of life. It helps us avoid negative thoughts and temptations and follow the way of Allah and the last messenger (PBUH). This path will benefit Muslims in this world and the hereafter. Here is the dua for Rizq and the dua for Jannah.

There are many other benefits associated with saying Takbir, but we couldn’t list them all due to the shortage of space in this article. However, the ones listed above are most significant and meaningful for a Muslim and describe the true benefits of saying Takbeer.

Why do Muslims say Takbeer?

Muslims say takbeer for several reasons. The main reason for saying takbeer is because Allah orders it in the Holy Quran, and the Holy Propeht (PBUH) preached and practiced it.

In Surah Al-Isra Verse 111, Allah says, “And say, “All praise is for Allah, Who has never had ˹any˺ offspring; nor does He have a partner in ˹governing˺ the kingdom; nor is He pathetic, needing a protector. And revere Him immensely.”

Secondly, we praise Allah by saying Takbir because it’s Sunnah.

Hadith: Abu Salama reported that Abu Huraira recited takbir in prayer on all occasions of rising and kneeling. We said: O Abu Huraira, what is this takbir? He said: Verily, it is the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). —Sahih Muslim 392e

What Islamic obligations require, saying Takbir?

Saying Takbir is essential for Muslims and included in almost all Islamic obligations. Here are a few Islamic obligations and prayers done by saying Takbir.

Salah: Saying Takbir is the basic part of offering Salah. Every Salah starts with saying Takbir (Allahu Akhbar). However, the number of Takbir varies for different types of Salah.

Takbir in Obligatory Salah

Abu Huraira reported that When the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) got up for prayer, he would say the takbir (Allah-o-Akbar) when standing, then say the takbir when bowing. then say:” Allah listened to him who praised him,” when coming to the erect position after bowing, then say while standing:” To Thee, our Lord, be the praise”, then recite the takbir when getting down for prostration, then say the takbir on raising his head, then say the takbir on prostrating himself, then say the takbir on raising his head. He would do that throughout the whole prayer till he would complete it, and he would say the takbir when he would get up at the end of two rak’as after adopting the sitting posture. Abu Huraira said: My prayer has the best resemblance amongst you with the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). —Sahih Muslim 392b

Takbir in Eid Salah

Salatul Eid is different and unique than our daily Salah. The number of Takbir increases for Eid Salah; the first Raakat has seven Takbir, and the second Raakat has five. Here is the hadith on this matter.

Hadith: Kathir bin Abdullah narrated from this father, from his grandfather: “The Prophet said the Takbir in the first (Rak’ah) sever (times) before the recitation and in the last, five (times) before the recitation.”—Jami` at-Tirmidhi 536

Funeral Prayer

The funeral prayer has four takbir and is called Salatul Janaza. After that, you can recite the dua for the dead, Inna lillahi Wa Inallah-e-Raji’oon, and the dua for patience.

Hadith: Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Laila said: “Zaid bin Arqam would say four Takbir for our funerals. (Once) he said five Takbir for a funeral, so we asked him about that, and he said: ‘The Messenger of Allah would say those Takbir.'” —Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1023

Hadith: It was narrated that Abu Umamah said: “The Sunnah, when offering the funeral prayer, is to recite Umm Al-Qur’an) the Exxence of the Qur’an) quietly in the first Takbir, Then to say three (more) Takbir and to say the Taslim after the last one.”—Sunan an-Nasa’i 1989

Eid Celebration

Muslims recite Takbir loudly on the day of Eid. Most of them recite it before offering Eid Salah. This Takbir is also known as Takbirat al-Eid and is a Sunnah.

Haj

Millions of Muslims globally recite Takbir in the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, especially from the 9th to 13th Dual-Hijjah, when Muslims recite Takbir loudly after offering Salah.

The pilgrims (Haji) recite Takbir several times in Haj. Saying Takbir every time you throw a stone at Shaytan (Jamrat) in Rami is done by millions of Muslims every year.

Adhan

Adhan, the daily call to prayer, is incomplete without Takbir. The Muezzin says Takbir six times in an Adhan, five times a day. Adhan also has Hayya Alal Falah two times, which means come to success.

A Muslim should repeat Adhan with the Muezzin and recite the dua for Adhan after it.

Takbir in daily dhikr and before something important

Muslims include Takbir (Allahu Akhbar) in their daily dhikr after offering Salah. This is called Tasbeeh and also includes Subhanallah and Alhamdulillah with Allahu Akhbar.

Hadith: It was narrated from `Ali (رضي الله عنه) that Fatimah came to the Prophet (PBUH) to ask him for a servant. He said: “Shall I not tell you of something that is better for you than that? Say Subhanallah thirty-three times, Allahu Akbar thirty-three times, and Alhamdulillah thirty-three times; one of them thirty-four times.` —Musnad Ahmad 604

We also consider saying Takbir before starting an important task or job. We believe reciitng Allah’s name will add his mercy and blessings to the task and we will be successful. Muslims also say Inshallah for important task and recite the dua for success for its completion.

Saying Takbir when seeing something incredible

Muslims often say Mashallah, Tabarakallah, and Allahu Akhbar when they see something beautiful. It can be any of Allah’s creations, such as a mountain, river, or meadow.
