Can we say Sadaqallahul Azim after reading the Quran or Surah?

Saying Sadaqallahul Azim after reading the Holy Quran has become a tradition in the Muslim world. Muslim kids and adults widely use this phrase whenever they finish reading the Quran.

Ramadan is the month where this phrase is used bluntly because more Muslims read the Quran and ask Allah’s forgiveness by reciting the forgiveness dua. Also, check out our articles on the best dua for Ramadan, the dua for breaking fast, and the Taraweeh dua.

Some Muslims scholars argue with the idea of saying Sadaqallahul Azim after reading the Holy Quran. They argue on the legitimacy of saying Sadaqallahul Azim after reading the Quran because it is not mentioned in any Hadiths nor practiced by the Holy Prophet (PBUH) or his companions (RA).

Furthermore, they label it as Bidhat or Bid’ah, which means adding something to Islam that was not practiced or preached at the time of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Their argument is logical because all of us know and believe that Allah wrote the Quran and that he is its protector. Then why would you say ‘Sadaqallahul Azim’ after reading the Quran when you know it’s his message?

Why would you say Sadaqallahul Azim —Allah spoke the truth when you know the Quran is the book of Allah? He is the creator of this universe and the skies and heavens.

Our Verdict: We believe that Muslims say Sadaqallahul Azim out of respect after reading the Holy Quran. And there is no harm in saying it as long as your intention is to give respect to the sacred text.

It is mentioned in the Hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim that ‘Innamal a‘malu bin-niyyat wa innama likulli imri’in ma nawa —Actions are through intentions’

Hadith: Narrated ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab: I heard Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) saying, “The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions, and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration was for what he emigrated for.” —Sahih al-Bukhari 1
