Dua for Parents

A person can not repay his or her parents in one life. Parents do everything in their power to make their kids happy. They sacrifice their happiness for us and eat less so we can sleep full of our bellies.

We, as kids, can not repay them in a single life. However, what we can do is pray for their long and healthy lives so that we can see their faces once a day and relax just by looking at them.

In Surah Luqman Verse 14, the Quran says “And We have commanded people to ˹honour˺ their parents. Their mothers bore them through hardship upon hardship, and their weaning takes two years. So be grateful to Me and your parents. To Me is the final return.”

This blog will provide the best dua for parents who are living or have passed away. We will provide duas from the Holy Quran and Hadith, as well as related tips and examples.

The Best Dua for Parents

There are several duas that you can make for your parents, in Arabic or your own language. However, the Holy Quran mentions one dua specifically for parents.

Dua for Parents in English: Rabbana ighfir li wa liwalidayya wa lilmu’mineena yawma yaqoomu al-hisab. —Surah Ibrahim Verse 41

Dua for Parents with English translation: Our Lord! Forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day when the reckoning will be established.

Explanation: This is the supplication made by Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH) for his parents. In Surah Ibrahim, the story of Propeht Ibrahim (PBUH) is mentioned where he is asking Allah’s mercy for his sons, Ishmael and Isaac (PBUH) who settled in Mecca, near to Kabbah so that they can establish prayers and call people to pray.

He then ask Allah to make his sons victorious in this quest and soften the hearts of people so they believe in them. He then asked forgiveness for himself, his parents, and the believers for the day of judgment.

Prophet Ibrahim’s parents were non-believers, but he prayed for them because he had promised them it. This shows Prophet Ibrahim’s love and gratitude towards his parents.

Dua for Parents’ health and long life

You can pray for your parent’s health and long life in your language. However, several Muslims believe this dua from the Quran to be effective for a parent’s health and long life.

English transliteration: Rabbi awzi’ni an ashkura ni’mataka allati an’amta ‘alayya wa ‘ala walidayya wa an a’mala salihan tardaahu wa aslih li fi dhurriyyati inni tubtu ilayka wa inni mina al-muslimeen. —Surah Al-Ahqaf Verse 15

English translation: My Lord! Enable me to be grateful for Your favor, which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to work righteousness that You will approve. And make my offspring righteous. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.

Explanation: The verse is taken Surah Al-Ahqaf in which the Quran speaks about Propeht Moses (PBUH) and his people who disobeyed the book and teachings sent to them. There is good news for those who followed his teachings and bad news for thoses who didnt.

Allah will fill the paradise with those who follow the teachings of Prophet Moses (PBUH) and with those who honor their parents. The Quran further says that the good deeds of those people will be accepted and their misdeeds will be overlooked.

The message from this Surah is to respect our parents in every possible way because it will be a parameter for us on the day of judgment.
