How to do Ruqiyah

You have probably heard about doing Ruqiyah or the word Ruqiyah, but you don’t know what it is. To put it simply, Ruqiyah is an Islamic religion that avoids stress, pain, evil eye, and much more.

This blog will discuss Ruqiyah, how to do it, and what Quranic verses are used to do Ruqiyah correctly.

What is Ruqiyah?

The word Ruqiyah or Ruqya means incantation in English. It is the process of curing the sick and avoiding the adverse effects of the evil eye.

The Islamic practice of healing the sick and possessed with the Holy Quran is widely practiced in the Muslim world. Several Muslims do it themselves, and others go to the mosque to ask the Imam to perform Ruqiyah.

In short, Ruqiyah is a special dua that cures the ill and sick with specific Quranic verses.

Hadith: Narrated by ‘Aqqar bin Al-Mughirah from his father that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever seeks treatment by cauterization, or with Ruqyah, then he had absolved himself of reliance upon Allah.” — Sunan Ibn Majah 3489

How to do Ruqiyah?

You can do Ruqiyah yourself or ask someone to do it for you. The process includes the recitation of Surah Fatiha, Surah Nas, and Surah Falaq with other Surahs from the Holy Quran.

Once you have recited the Surahs, blow air on your palms and rub them on your body or the affected area. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) recited these surahs when he was sick.

Narrated by Aisha (RA), “Whenever the Prophet (PBUH) fell ill, he would recite the Mu’awwidhat (Surah Nas & Falaq) and blow, and when his pain grew worse, I would recite over him and wipe his hand over him, hoping for its blessing.” — Sunan Ibn Majah 3529

Which Surahs are used in Ruqiyah?

Ruqiyah is a dua containing surahs from those in the Holy Quran. The process is done by the affected or anyone close to him or her. Here are the complete Surahs used in Ruqiyah.

In the Quran, Allah claims to have sent the Quran to heal and mercy the believers.

We send down the Quran as a healing and mercy for the believers, but it only increases the wrongdoers in loss. — Surah Al-Isra Verse 82

What are the steps to do Ruqiyah?

As mentioned above, Ruqiyah is a simple form of dua. It is considered one of the best ways to ask Allah’s forgiveness and help. Ruqiyah is simple; you can do it yourself or ask your wife or mother.

Step 1

A Muslim man performing Wudu (ablution) in a serene and peaceful environment. The scene shows him in a small, traditional ablution area with a stone or marble basin, gently pouring water over his hands and face. The man is dressed in simple, modest attire, with a calm and focused expression. The background features soft natural light, and the surroundings are clean and simple, evoking a sense of purity and devotion. The image captures the spiritual significance of the ritual in a respectful and authentic manner.

Perform ablution before reciting the Quranic verses. Ablution or Wudu makes you clean and ready to seek Allah’s blessings. This is why Wudu is a must before Namaz and Tawaf.

Step 2

Surah Al Fatiha

Start by reciting Surah Fatiha, Surah Nas, and Surah Falaq. After reciting it, recite the other Surah with specific Verses mentioned above.

Step 3

After reciting all the Surahs, raise both hands and pray to Allah for anything discomforting you. It can be anything from being sick to being possessed.

Step 4

A Muslim man making dua (supplication) in a serene and peaceful environment. The scene shows him seated or standing with his hands raised in prayer, facing a simple and natural backdrop that could include elements like a quiet room, a mosque interior, or an outdoor setting with soft natural light. The man is dressed in modest attire, with an expression of devotion and focus. The surroundings are clean and uncluttered, emphasizing the spiritual connection during the act of dua. The image captures the peacefulness and sincerity of the moment.

After you are done praying to Allah. Blow air on your palms and rub your palms on your entire body. Focus more on the part that is hurting you. If it is a knee injury, rub your hands on the knee.

Step 5

Believe in the power of the Quran. You must believe you will be cured after doing Ruqiyah, just like the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

The significance of Ruqiyah in Hadith

Various Hadiths prove that the Holy Prophet used to pray for the ill, asking Allah’s mercy for him.

It was narrated from ‘Aishah (RA) that one of the things that the Prophet (PBUH) used to say for the sick person, with saliva on his finger (dipped in dust), was: “Bismillah, turbatu ardina, biriqati ba’dina, liyushfa saqimuna. Bi’dhni Rabbina (In the Name of Allah, the dust of our land mixed with the saliva of one of us, to cure our sick one by the permission of our Lord).” — Sunan Ibn Majah 3521

It is mentioned in the Hadith that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) prayed for the sick and asked his followers to do the same. Saying ‘As’alullahal-‘Azima Rabbal-‘Arshil-‘Azimi, an yashfiyaka’ for a sick person can heal him or her.

In a Hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas (RA), The Prophet (PBUH) said, “He who visits a sick person who is not on the point of death and supplicates seven times: As’alullahal-‘Azima Rabbal-‘Arshil-‘Azimi, an yashfiyaka (I beseech Allah the Great, the Rubb of the Great Throne, to heal you), Allah will certainly heal him from that sickness.” — Riyad as-Salihin 906

Saying Allāhumma] adh-hibil-ba’sa rabban-nās, washfi antash-shāfi, lā shifā’a illā shifā’uka shifā’an lā yughādiru saqama was the common practice of our Holy Prophet (PBUH) whenever he visited a sick person.

Ali (RA) narrated that “Whenever the Prophet (PBUH) would visit an ill person, he would said:‘[O Allah,] make the harm go away, Lord of mankind, and heal him, You are the Healer, there is no healing except your healing, a healing that does not leave any sickness ([Allāhumma] adh-hibil-ba’sa rabban-nās, washfi antash-shāfi, lā shifā’a illā shifā’uka shifā’an lā yughādiru saqama).’” — Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3565

Conclusion:

The Quran and Hadith play a significant role in the healing of the sick. We should recite the specific Verses and Surahs to perform Ruqiyah over the sick and ask Allah’s mercy for them.

What are the benefits of Ruqiyah?

Ruqiyah is a form of dua in which you seek Allah’s blessings from pain, stress, or evil eyes. Here are the benefits of doing Ruqiyah.

Protection from Evil Eye

Ruqiyah is the best dua for protection from the evil eye. It has been tested by thousands of Muslims worldwide and mentioned in several Hadiths.

It was narrated from ‘Aishah that the Prophet (PBUH) commanded her to recite Ruqyah to treat the evil eye. — Sunan Ibn Majah 3512

Performed by Angle Jibrael

One day, Angle Jibrael visited the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and found him sick. He performed Ruqiyah by saying “Bismillahi arqika, min kulli shay’in yu’dhika, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin aw hasidin. Allahu yashfika, bismillahi arqika.”

Narrated from Abu Sa’eed that Jibra’il came to the Prophet (PBUH) and said: “O Muhammad, you are ill. He said: ‘Yes.’ He said: Bismillahi arqika, min kulli shay’in yu’dhika, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin aw hasidin. Allahu yashfika, bismillahi arqika (In the Name of Allah I perform Ruqyah for you, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye, may Allah heal you. In the Name of Allah I perform Ruqyah for you). — Sunan Ibn Majah 3523

Healing the sick

It was said that if a person is seriously injured or sick, his loved ones perform Ruqiyah and pray for his better health.

It was narrated from Anas that the Prophet (PBUH) allowed Ruqyah for the scorpion’s sting, the evil eye, and Namlah (sores or small pustules ulcers or sores on a person’s sides). —Sunan Ibn Majah 3516

Prescribed by the Holy Prophet (PBUH)

Making duas and Ruqiyah for the sick is prescribed by the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Abu Bakr bin Muhammad narrated that Khalidah bint Anas, the mother of Banu Hazm As-Sa’idiyyah, came to the Prophet (PBUH) and recited a Ruqyah to him, and he told her to use it. — Sunan Ibn Majah 3514

What is the best way to do Ruqiyah?

Accoding to us the best and most effective way to do Ruqiyah is with Zam Zam. The power of Ruqiyah with Zam Zam can surely cure anything until it is against Allah’s will.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Recite all verses and surahs mentioned above for Ruqiyah
  2. Recite all the duas mentioned in the Hadiths above
  3. Blow it on a glass of Zam Zam
  4. Stand and face the Kabah. Drink the glass of Zam Zam with three pauses
  5. While and after drinking Zam Zam, think and believe that you will be cured by the mercy of Allah

Narrated that Jabir bin ‘Abdullah said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) say: ‘The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.’” —Sunan Ibn Majah 3062

FAQs

Is Ruqiyah Haram?

Ruqiyah is a form of dua made for the sick or possessed. It is not Haram and is completely allowed in Islam. However, there is confusion regarding this in the Muslim community. Some of them present a Hadith that forbids doing Ruqiyah.

Narrated from ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud: The Prophet of Allah (PBUH) disliked ten things: Yellow dye, meaning Khaluq, changing gray hair, dragging one’s Izar, wearing gold rings, playing with dice (Ki’ab), (a woman) showing her adornment to people to whom it is not permissible for her to show it, reciting Ruqyah, unless it is with Al-Mu’awidhat (Verses seeking refuge with Allah), hanging amulets, removing to ejaculate in other than the right place, and taking away the milk of an infant boy (by having intercourse with his mother)- but he did not say that this is Haram.

To counter this Hadith, here is another one.

Narrated that Jabir said: “There was a family among the Ansar, called Al ‘Amr bin Hazm, who used to recite Ruqyah for the scorpion sting, but the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) forbade Ruqyah. They came to him and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! You have forbidden Ruqyah, but we recite Ruqyah against the scorpion’s sting.’ He said to them: ‘Recite it to me.’ So they recited it to him, and he said: ‘There is nothing wrong with this, this is confirmed.’”

Is Ruqiyah mentioned in the Quran?

We have searched several Surhas of the Holy Quran but couldn’t find Ruqiyah or the way to perform It. However, the Quran has a number of verses that can heal the sick.
