Islam is a religion of peace, and it has a dua for almost everything. Last week, we created a guide on dua for Pain and dua for Parents and mentioned several duas and supplications from Hadiths and the Holy Quran.
This blog will discuss the Dua for Protection from evil, Shaytans and Jinn, haram, and everything else.
How it works?
The Islamic duas and supplications will work if you firmly believe them. You must make the supplication with a pure heart and believe in Allah’s will. Allah says in Surah Ghafir Verse 60, ‘Your Lord has proclaimed, “Call upon Me; I will respond to you.”‘
Dua for Protection from Evil Eye
This is probably the most searched dua on the internet. A person who is progressing in life is scared about losing what he has achieved. In some cases, the person who did great last year is facing severe difficulties now. It can be anything from financial difficulties to bad health.
Dua for Protection from Evil Eye from the Quran
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) used to recite Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas (Al-Mu’awwadhatan) to seek protection from the evil eye.
It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed said: “The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to seek refuge from the evil eye of the Jinn and the evil eye of humans. When Al-Mu’awwadhatan were revealed, he started to recite them and stopped reciting anything else.” —Sunan an-Nasa’i 5494
What is Mu’awwadhat?
Mu’awwadhat, in short, is a supplication practiced by the Holy Prophet (PBUH) to seek refuge from calamities. According to our research, the Mu’awwadhat is a collection of Quranic Surahs, including Surah Al-Nas and Al-Falaq.
Hadith: Narrated `Aisha: Whenever Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) became sick, he would recite Mu’awwidhat (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas) and then blow his breath over his body. When he became seriously ill, I used to recite (these two Suras) and rub his hands over his body, hoping for its blessings. —Sahih al-Bukhari 5016
Surah Al-Falaq
English transliteration: Qul a’oodhu bi-rabbil-falaq, Min sharri ma khalaq, Wa min sharri ghaasiqin itha waqab, Wa min sharri an-naffathaati fil ‘uqad, Wa min sharri haasidin itha hasad. —Surah Al-Falaq
English translation: Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak, From the evil of that which He created, And from the evil of darkness when it settles, And from the evil of the blowers in knots, And from the evil of an envier when he envies.’
Surah An-Nas
English transliteration: Qul a’oodhu bi-rabbin-naas, Malikin-naas, Ilaahin-naas, Min sharril-waswaasil-khannaas, Allathee yuwaswisu fee sudoorin-naas, Minal-jinnati wan-naas. — Surah An-Nas
English translation: Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, The Sovereign of mankind, The God of mankind, From the evil of the whisperer who withdraws, Who whispers in the breasts of mankind, Among jinn and among mankind.’
Therefore, the best shield is reciting the last two Holy Quran Surahs as a dua for protection against the evil eye.
The second best dua for protection against the evil eye is by doing Ruqiyah. Ruqiyah is a combination of some powerful daus from the Holy Quran and Hadiths. The Holy Prophet prescribed Ruqiyah to fight the evil eye.
Hadith: It was narrated from ‘Aishah that the Prophet (PBUH) commanded her to recite Ruqyah to treat the evil eye. —Sunan Ibn Majah 3512
Here is a complete guide on the significance of Ruqiyah and how to perform it for those who are unfamiliar with it.
For those who don’t believe in Evil Eye
Several hadiths mention that the sting of an evil eye is real. It is also mentioned that nothing in this world can change your destiny except an evil eye.
Hadith: Ibn ‘Abbas reported Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) as saying: The influence of an evil eye is a fact; if anything would precede the destiny it would be the influence of an evil eye, and when you are asked to take bath (as a cure) from the influence of an evil eye, you should take bath. —Sahih Muslim 2188
Dua for Protection from All Evil
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) used to recite this dua to protect himself from all evil.
Dua for protection from Evil English transliteration: Allahumma inni a’oodhu bika min munkarati al-akhlaaqi wal-a’maali wal-ahwaa’i.
English translation: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from evil character, evil actions, and evil desires
Hadith: Ziyad bin `Ilaqah narrated from his uncle, that he said: “[The Prophet (PBUH)] used to say: ‘O Allah, I seek refuge in You from evil character, evil actions, and evil desires (Allāhumma innī a`ūdhu bika min munkarātil-akhlāqi wal-a`māli wal-ahwā’).’” —Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3591
Explanation: In this Hadith, we can see the Holy Prophet (PBUH) asking for Allah’s refuge from inner evil. The evil that is within ourselves, fighting our beliefs and the teachings of Islam.
We fight our inner evil daily but can’t completely exterminate it. That is why the Holy Prophet (PBUH) prescribed this dua to seek refuge from Allah.
Second Dua for protection from Evil
Here is another variation of the Dua for protection from evil mentioned in this Hadith.
Narrated Shakl ibn Humayd: I said: Messenger of Allah, teach me a supplication. He said: Say: “O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of what I hear, from the evil of what I see, from the evil of what I speak, from the evil of what I think, and from the evil of my semen” (i.e. sexual passion).—Sunan Abi Dawud 1551
Dua for protection from evil in Arabic:
قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ سَمْعِي وَمِنْ شَرِّ بَصَرِي وَمِنْ شَرِّ لِسَانِي وَمِنْ شَرِّ قَلْبِي وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَنِيِّي
English transliteration: Qul Allahumma inni a’oodhu bika min sharri sam’i wa min sharri basari wa min sharri lisani wa min sharri qalbi wa min sharri maniyyī.
English translation: O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of what I hear, from the evil of what I see, from the evil of what I speak, from the evil of what I think, and from the evil of my semen.
Dua for Protection from Shaytan and Jinn
Shaytan and Jinn are real and exist in our universe. Some of them are evil and like to interfere in our daily lives. While we don’t have the powers to see them, we can surely fight them with this dua.
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) recited this dua for protection from Jinn and Shaytan.
English transliteration: Allāhumma ‘innī ‘a`ūdhu bika minal-khubthi walkhabā’ith.
English translation: O Allah, I seek protection in You from evil and the evil ones (or, from the evil male and female Jinn).
Hadith: [Bismillāhi] Allāhumma ‘innī ‘a`ūdhu bika minal-khubthi walkhabā’ith. [In the Name of Allah]. O Allah, I seek protection in You from evil and the evil ones (or, from the evil male and female Jinn). Reference: Al-Bukhari 1/45, Muslim 1/283. Said bin Mansur reported the addition of Bismillah at its beginning. See Fathul-Bari 1/244 —Hisn al-Muslim 10
Dua for Protection of Children
We love our kids, and that is a fact. We would do anything in our power to protect our children from evil, which is why we have included this heading in this blog.
Here are the duas we found relevant to protect our kids from evil.
English transliteration: Rabbij ‘alni muqeema as-salaati wa min dhurriyyati, Rabbana wa taqabbal du’aai. —Surah Ibrahim Verse 40
English translation: My Lord! Make me and those ˹believers˺ of my descendants keep up prayer. Our Lord! Accept my prayers.
Explanation: The idea behind praying to Allah to make our children good Muslims is to help them avoid evil deeds and inner temptations. A practicing Muslim is more likely to resist evil thoughts and desires compared to a non-practicing Muslim.
English transliteration: Wallatheena yaqooloona Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wathurriyyatina qurrata a’yunin waj’alna lilmuttaqeena imaama. —Surah Al-Furqan Verse 74
English translation: They are those who pray, “Our Lord! Bless us with ‘pious’ spouses and offspring who will be the joy of our hearts, and make us models for the righteous.”
Explanation: In this verse, the Quran talks about true believers who have repented from sins. They pray to Allah to bless them with righteous wives and children who will be a source of joy to them.
Other Duas for the Protection of Kids
Several other duas and Quranic surahs are prescribed by Islamic scholars for the protection of kids.
As per our research, popular Muslim scholars prescribe Tawaud, four Quls, and Ayat-al-Kursi as the bare minimum for our kid’s protection from evil.
Tawud
Auzubillah Minashaitan Nirajeem
I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil.
4 Quls
Ayat-al-Kursi
The Ayat-al-Kursi is significant in the Quran and has powers. The Hadith mentions that It has a special power because it is Allah’s speech.
Narrated Abu Hurairah: the Messenger of Allah (PBUH): “For everything there is a hump (pinnacle) and the hump (pinnacle) of the Qur’an is Surat Al-Baqarah, in it there is an Ayah which is the master of the Ayat in the Qur’an; [it is] Ayat Al-Kursi.” — Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2878
We can recite Ayat-al-Kursi to our kids in the morning, and nothing will harm them till evening.
Hadith: Narrated Abu Hurairah: that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Whoever recites Ha Mim Al-Mu’min – up to – To Him is the return (40:1-3) and Ayat Al-Kursi when he reaches (gets up in) the morning, he will be protected by them until the evening. And whoever recites them when he reaches the evening, he will be protected by them until the morning.” —Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2879
English transliteration: Allahu la ilaha illa huwa al-hayyul-qayyoom. La ta’khuthuhu sinatun wa la nawmun. Lahu ma fissamawati wa ma fil-ardh. Man thallathee yashfa’u ‘indahu illa bi-ithnihi.
English translation: Allah! There is no god ‘worthy of worship’ except Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission? He ˹fully˺ knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them, but no one can grasp any of His knowledge—except what He wills ‘to reveal’. His Seat encompasses the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of both does not tire Him. For He is the Most High, the Greatest.
Dua for protection from Enemies
When we are talking about enemies or enemies in the Islamic context, we are referring to the disbelievers. Here are a few duas from Hadiths that you can use as a dua for protection from enemies.
English transliteration: Allahumma inni a’oodhu bika min ghalabati ad-dayn wa shamatati al-a’daa.
English translation: O Allah, I seek refuge with You from being overwhelmed by debt and from being overpowered by the enemy, and from the enemy rejoicing at my misfortune
Hadith: It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr that The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to say supplication in these words: “Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min ghalabatid-dain, wa ghalabatil-‘aduwwi, wa shamatatil-a’da’ —Sunan an-Nasa’i 5488
English transliteration: Allahumma inna naj’aluka fee nuhoorihim wa na’oodhu bika min shuroorihim.
English translation: O Allah! We put You in front of them, and we seek refuge in You from their evils.
Hadith: Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: When the Prophet (PBUH) had any fear of an enemy, he used to supplicate: “Allahumma inna naj’aluka fi nuhurihim, wa na’udhu bika min shururihim. —Riyad as-Salihin 1327
English transliteration: Allahumma anta ‘adudi wa naseeri, bika ahoolu wa bika ajoolu wa bika asoolu, wa bika uqaatil.
English translation: O Allah, You are my Supporter and my Helper. With Your help I get strength, and with Your help I bounce upon the enemy and defeat it, and with Your help I fight
Hadith: Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) set out to participate in Jihad, he would supplicate: “Allahumma Anta ‘adudi wa nasiri, bika ahulu, wa bika asulu, wa bika uqatilu. —Riyad as-Salihin 1327
Dua for Protection from Punishment of Grave
We have all committed major or minor sins, and may Allah forgive us. The grave is one of the most fearful places where every Muslim will rest. Their deeds will determine how the grave will welcome them, with fire or with flowers.
There is still time to repent till we are alive, and Allah says in the Quran Surah Al-Baqarah Verse 160, “As for those who repent, mend their ways, and let the truth be known, they are the ones to whom I will turn ˹in forgiveness˺, for I am the Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful.”
Here is the best Dua for protection from grave punishments:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَفِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ
English transliteration: Allahumma inni a’oodhu bika minal kasali wal-harami wal-jubni wal-bukhli wa fitnati ad-dajjal wa ‘adhabi al-qabr.
English translation: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, old age, cowardice, miserliness, the tribulation of the Dajjal and the torment of the grave.
Hadith: Anas said: “The Prophet [SAW] used to say in his supplication: ‘Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-kasali, wal-harami, wal-jubni, wal-bukhli, wa fitnatid-dajjali, wa ‘adhabil-qabr. —Sunan an-Nasa’i 5451
Here is another supplication made by the Holy Prophet (PBUH) to escape the punishment of the grave.
English transliteration: A’oodhu bika min ‘adhabi jahannam, wa a’oodhu bika min ‘adhabi al-qabr, wa a’oodhu bika min fitnati al-Maseeh ad-Dajjal, wa a’oodhu bika min fitnati al-mahya wa al-mamat, wa a’oodhu bika min fitnati al-qabr. —Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 694
English translation: I seek refuge with You from the punishment of Hellfire, and I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave. I seek refuge with You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge from the trials of life and death. I seek refuge with You from the trial of the grave.
Tip!
Reciting these duas is only beneficial when you have sincerely repented from your sins and asked Allah’s forgiveness with a pure heart. We are all weak in staying on the right path, but the one who seeks Allah’s forgiveness after committing a sin is better than the one who doesn’t.
Therefore, we recommend that you recite these duas for protection from the punishment of the grave, along with saying Astagfirullah after every Salah and frequently throughout the day.
Wrap Up
We have provided you with the best dua to protect you from the evil eye, Shatan, Jinn, and enemies. Furthermore, we have also provided you the dua for the protection of children and from punishment of the grave.
We hope that you will find this guide helpful and share it with your friends and loved ones.
