Dua for Marriage

Marriage is one of the most beautiful things for a human being, especially a Muslim. It completes a man and a woman and binds them together for life (if they will). As a result of this marriage, the man and the woman will have children and grandchildren.

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said, “When a man marries, he has fulfilled half of the religion; so let him fear God regarding the remaining half.” —Mishkat al-Masabih 3096

On top of that, they take care of each other’s needs and wants. A man provides everything to a woman and receives love and respect in return. However, with time, things have changed, and Muslims are not getting married as easily as they did in the past.

The problem

If we check the history of Islam and go back fourteen hundred years, we don’t find the problem of marriage proposals. All women were married, and those who got divorced or widowed got quick proposals. This is the reason that there is no direct dua for marriage mentioned in the Holy Quran and Hadiths.

However, in today’s world, getting married is a difficult thing due to financial constraints. A man must have his own house and car and earn decent money before sending a marriage proposal. This results in late marriages, which is affecting both men and women.

The effects are destroying our society both physically and mentally. Our kids are getting overaged and have sexual and emotional frustration. Therefore, they are looking for a dua for marriage, which can help them have a spouse.

As mentioned above, there is no specific dua mentioned in the Quran and Hadith for getting a marriage proposal. However, a few Islamic scholars have recommended a few duas, which we will discuss in this blog.

Islamic Dua for Marriage

The best dua for marriage can be made in our language. Allah knows what we are going through, and we control ourselves daily to defeat Shaytan and evil thoughts.

You can pray to Allah after every Salah to get married as soon as possible. Don’t forget to ask for a good spouse who can help you grow in life spiritually and mentally. You can also add these Quranic verses in your dua for marriage in your supplication.

English transliteration: Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a’yunin waj’alna lilmuttaqeena imama. —Surah Al-Furqan Verse 74

English translation: Our Lord! Bless us with ‘pious’ spouses and offspring who will be the joy of our hearts, and make us models for the righteous.

Explanation: This dua can be explained from its translation. In it, a Muslim man asks Allah to grant him a religious and pious wife and children who can become the love of his life. He further asks Allah to let them become role models for the believers.

Dua for Marriage in Islam

—Surah Al-Anbya Verse 89

English translation: My Lord! Do not leave me childless, though You are the Best of Successors.

Explanation: This is not an ordinary dua. This dua was made by Prophet Zachariah (Zakria) (PBUH), who asked Allah not to leave him without hier, and his dua was answered, and he was blessed with John (Yahya).

You can make the same dua to Allah, asking for a righteous wife and children. And Inshallah, Allah will fulfill your dua.

Musa Dua for Marriage

English transliteration: Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqeer. —Surah Al-Qasas Verse 24

English translation: My Lord! I am truly in ˹desperate˺ need of whatever provision You may have in store for me.

Explanation: This dua for marriage was made by Prophet Moses (PBUH) when he helped the daughters of Prophet Shuaib (PBUH) in Midian. Allah helped Moses find a wife, and he will help you.

Dua for Marriage Proposla

English transliteration: Rabbi hab li mina assaliheen. —Surah As-Saffat Verse 100

English translation: My Lord! Bless me with righteous offspring.

Explanation: This dua was made by Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH) for offspring, and he was blessed with Ishmael and later with Isach. Asking Allah for offspring (kids) is an indirect dua for marriage.

How to recite these duas for marriage?

As we mentioned above, you can use these duas as a supplement to your dua for marriage. Adding the duas of the Prophets can certainly help speed up the process; however, nothing is guaranteed.

Another thing you can do is seek Allah’s forgiveness by reciting “Astaghfirullah” several times a day. You must hold on to the rope of Allah until you get married and avoid engaging in unlawful activities, which are prohibited in Islam—activities that may lead you to sin in fulfilling your physical desires. Here is a complete guide on dua for protection from evil and Shaytan.

That said, a few Islamic scholars prescribe a certain number when reciting these verses, some of which are listed below.

  • Recite Surah al-Ahzaab (Chapter 33) regularly.
  • Recite Surah al-Mumtahinah (Chapter 60) five times daily.
  • Recite Surah Taha (Chapter 20), blow on a glass of water, and let the girl drink it.
  • Recite Surah al-Muzzammil once a day for 41 days, then pray for your intention (Ref: Wazaif-ut-Talib, pg. 76).
  • Recite verse 36 of Surah Yasin 100 times before the Tahajjud prayer for 40 days:
“Subh’aanallad’ee khalaqal azwaaja kullahaa mimmaa tumbitul arz’u wa min anfusihim wa mimmaa laa ya’lamoon.” —Surah Yasin Verse 36
    سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْأَزْوَاجَ كُلَّهَا مِمَّا تُنبِتُ الْأَرْضُ وَمِنْ أَنفُسِهِمْ وَمِمَّا لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
  • Recite Surah Furqan Ayat 74, 75, and 76 21 times for 3 days, then pray for nikah (marriage).
  • Recite Surah Tariq (Chapter 86) three times daily, especially on Arafat Day during Hajj, or ask someone attending to do it, or do it daily from home.

Advice to parents

Allah has created us in pairs, and your children will get married sooner or later. You should trust Allah and seek His mercy for yourself and your children.

Forced Marriages

We want to offer advice to some parents who force their children, especially daughters, into marriage. You should consult with your daughters before marrying them to someone. They must find him likable (including physically), as this is one of the fundamental pillars of a successful marriage.

Here is a Hadith on this,

Narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “A previously-married woman should not be married until she is consulted, and a virgin should not be married until her consent is sought, and her consent is her silence.” —(Sunan Ibn Majah 1871, Sunan an-Nasa’i 3265, Sahih Muslim 1421b,  Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1107)

Another Hadith nullifying forced marriages

Narrated Khansa bint Khidam Al-Ansariya: that her father gave her in marriage when she was a matron, and she disliked that marriage. So she went to Allah’s Messenger (PBUH), and he declared the marriage invalid. —Sahih al-Bukhari 5138

Advice to Kids looking to get married

You should trust your parents in finding the right spouse for you. They are your guardian after Allah, and their decision will be in your best favor.

Love Marriages

We often see cases where a girl marries her lover or boyfriend without the consent or approval of her father. Fathers act as guardians (Wali) for their daughters, so a daughter must seek her father’s permission before marriage.

Hadith: Aishah (RA) narrated that The Messenger of Allah said: “Whichever woman married without the permission of her Wali her marriage is invalid, her marriage is invalid, her marriage is invalid. If he entered into her, then the Mahr is for her in lieu of what he enjoyed from her private part. If they disagree, then the Sultan is the Wali for one who has no Wali.” —Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1102

Wrap Up

So far, we have discussed the best Quranic verses you can use as a dua for marriage. We pray that you find your spouse soon and that she/he will become the blessing of your heart.

We could not find a Hadith in this regard, but we have added a few supplications for marriages, which are prescribed by Islamic scholars with numbers. We hope these duas for difficulty in marriage will help you find a soulmate.
