dua for pain

As Muslims, we believe that everything comes with the will of Allah. It can be pain or joy; we should accept it as our destiny and continue with the will of Allah.

But that does not mean you can not pray for Allah’s mercy from the pain. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) prayed to Allah whenever he was in pain. In this blog, we will be discussing the best dua for the pain relief and how to recite it.

What is the best Dua for Pain?

We have searched the Holy Quran and Hadiths and found the following duas for pain relief.

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) used to recite ‘Bismillah’ three times over the pain area and then say “A’udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhiru”.

Hadith: Uthman b. Abu al-‘As Al-Thaqafi reported that he made a complaint of pain to Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) that he felt in his body at the time he had become Muslim. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said: Place your hand at the place where you feel pain in your body and say Bismillah (in the name of Allah) three times and seven times A’udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhiru (I seek refuge with Allah and with His Power from the evil that I find and that I fear).— Sahih Muslim 2202

Dua for Pain in English transliteration: A’udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhiru

Dua for Pain English translation: I seek refuge with Allah and with His Power from the evil that I find and that I fear

Explanation: We can see what the Holy Prophet (PBUH) has prescribed us to recite when in pain. The powerful Bismillah can eliminate anything evil in your body because it is the name of Allah.

Secondly, the dua associated with it says you are asking for Allah’s mercy from the powers of evil. You are submitting yourself to Allah by reciting this dua for pain and asking him to save you from the powers of evil.

So whenever you are suffering from pain, recite these two duas. Place your hand over your head and recite the dua for pain if you have a headache. The same can be done for toothache or knee pain.

If Allah will, your pain will vanish in no time. But if Allah has planned this pain for you, then you must accept it as Allah’s will and ask forgiveness.

Hadith on the Dua of Pain: Uthman b. Abl al-As said that he came to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). ‘Uthman said : I had a pain which was about to destroy me. So the Prophet (PBUH said : Wipe it with your right hand seven times and say: “أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ (I seek refuge in the dominance of Allah, and His might from the evil of what I find).” Then I did it. Allah removed (the pain) that I had, and I kept on suggesting it to my family and to others. — Sunan Abi Dawud 3891

When Uthman can be relieved from a pain that was killing him after reciting the dua for pain, why won’t you?

Dua for Pain from the Holy Quran?

We have searched several Quranic verses and couldn’t find a direct verse towards pain relief or as a dua for pain in the Holy Quran.

However, if you look at Hadiths, we find the Holy Prophet (PBUH) has used some Quranic Surahs as a dua for pain relief.

Hadith: Narrated A’ishah: the wife of Prophet (PBUH) said: When the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) suffered from some pain, he recited mu’awwadhat in his heart and blew (them over him). When the pain became severe, I recited (them) over him and wiped him with his hand in the hope of its blessing. —Sunan Abi Dawud 3891

What is Mu’awwadhat?

Mu’awwadhat, in short, is a supplication practiced by the Holy Prophet (PBUH) to seek refuge from calamities. According to our research, the Mu’awwadhat is a collection of Quranic Surahs, including Surah Al-Nas and Al-Falaq.

Hadith: Narrated `Aisha: Whenever Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) became sick, he would recite Mu’awwidhat (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas) and then blow his breath over his body. When he became seriously ill, I used to recite (these two Suras) and rub his hands over his body hoping for its blessings. —Sahih al-Bukhari 5016

A few hadiths suggest that Surah Al-Ikhlas and Surah Al-Kafirun, along with a few names of Allah, are also added to Mu’awwadhat.

Hadith: Uqba b. ‘Amir said that God’s Messenger ordered him to recite al-Mu’awwidhat* after every prayer. * Suras 113 and 114 are commonly called al-Mu’awwidhatan, this being the dual. Although al-Masabih has the dual, the Mishkat has the plural. In the notes to the Damascus edition it is suggested that suras 109 and 112 may be added, but it is more probable that the Mishkat has used the plural in error. —Mishkat al-Masabih 969

The confirmation of Surah An-Nas and Surah Al-Falaq, the last two surahs of the Holy Quran used in Mu’awwadhat, is confirmed from various Hadith books. Therefore, we can surely use Mu’awwadhat as the dua for pain.

Surah An-Nas

English transliteration: Qul a’oodhu bi-rabbin-naas, Malikin-naas, Ilaahin-naas, Min sharril-waswaasil-khannaas, Allathee yuwaswisu fee sudoorin-naas, Minal-jinnati wan-naas. — Surah An-Nas

English translation: Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, The Sovereign of mankind, The God of mankind, From the evil of the whisperer who withdraws, Who whispers in the breasts of mankind, Among jinn and among mankind.’

Surah Al-Falaq

English transliteration: Qul a’oodhu bi-rabbil-falaq, Min sharri ma khalaq, Wa min sharri ghaasiqin itha waqab, Wa min sharri an-naffathaati fil ‘uqad, Wa min sharri haasidin itha hasad. —Surah Al-Falaq

English translation: Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak, From the evil of that which He created, And from the evil of darkness when it settles, And from the evil of the blowers in knots, And from the evil of an envier when he envies.’
