Etiquette of Using Toilet in Islam

We have mentioned the dua to enter the bathroom and leave it, which was recited by the Holy Prophet (PBUH). But without mentioned etiquettes of using the toilet, this blog will be incomplete.

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) was sent to earth to spread Allah’s message, and his life is the best model for Muslims. Here are the dos and don’ts when using a bathroom, followed by the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

Take off anything on your hand

We are usually in a hurry when it comes to going to the toilet. However, the toilet is a place filled with germs, so we should remove our watches, rings, and other hands and refrain from taking mobile phones to the washroom.

When the Prophet entered the toilet, he would take off his ring. —Sunan Ibn Majah 303

Use of Water

Cleaning ourselves after answering nature’s call is the basic thing we teach to kids. This is medically and religiously beneficial because cleanliness is half faith, as mentioned in Sahih Muslim 223.

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) used enough water to clean himself before coming out of the toilet, and we should do the same.

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allah come out of the toilet without first (cleansing himself) with water.” —Sunan Ibn Majah 354

Don’t try to follow the trend of whipping your back with toilet paper because it won’t purify you. We recommend the use of both water and toilet paper to wipe yourself after answering nature’s call. We have also debunked the mystery of Muslims using toilet paper if you might be interested in this topic.

How to clean when there is no water?

If you are stuck in a place without water and want to answer nature’s call, keep three stones with you to wipe yourself. This is applicable when nothing is available to wipe yourself, like toilet paper or a piece of cloth.

Hadith: When any one of you goes to the Gha’it (toilet to defecate), let him take with him three stones and clean himself with them, for that will suffice him.” —Sunan an-Nasa’i 44

Doing Wudu after using Toilet

There is a myth of doing Wudu (Abulation) after answering nature’s call. This is not correct, and the Holy Prophet (PBUH) did not perform tabulation after going to the toilet.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) went out to toilet, then food was brought. A man said: “O Messenger of Allah, are you not going to perform ablution?” He said: ‘Am I going to pray?’ —Sunan Ibn Majah 3261

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) made it clear that it’s not mandatory to perform Wudu after using the bathroom. However staying in the state of Wudu has its own blessings and one must recite the dua for Wudu before doing it.

Dont use your right hand

Most of us use our right hand for eating and shaking hands with others. According to the teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), it is advised not to use the right hand while in the washroom. A Muslim should refrain from using the right hand to touch their private parts or to clean themselves after using the toilet.

It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah that his father said: “The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: ‘When any one of you enters Al-Khala’ (the toilet), let him not touch his penis with his right hand.'” —Sunan an-Nasa’i 25

Dont face Qiblah

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) prohibted facing Qiblah while passing urine or stool. —Sunan an-Nasa’i 20

It is diffcult to keep track of the Qiblah direction, sepcially if you are in a public place like an airport or metro station. Try to find out the Qiblah direction with the Qiblah direction apps, which are availabe for free on App Store and Play Store.

Hadith: Narrated Abu Ayyub : That he (the Holy Prophet, sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said:”When you go to the privy, neither turn your face nor your back towards the qiblah at the time of excretion or urination, but turn towards the east or the west. (Abu Ayyub said): When we came to Syria, we found that the toilets already built there were facing the qiblah, We turned our faces away from them and begged pardon of Allaah. —Sunan Abi Dawud 9

Don’t Talk in the Toilet

Talking or saying salam to one another is prohibeted in the toilet. That is becasue the toilet is an impure place and we should not socialize on an impure place like toilet.

It was narrated from Jabir bin `Abdullah that: “A man passed by the Prophet while he was urinating, and greeted him by the Salam. The Messenger of Allah said to him: “If you see me in this situation, do not greet me with the Salam, for if you do that I will not respond to you.'” —Sunan Ibn Majah 352

Dont Urinate while standing

Today medical science has proved the negative issues with associated with urinating while standing. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) advised Muslims to urinate in a squating position.

Hadith: It was narrated that ‘Umar said: “The Messenger of Allah saw me urinating while standing, and he said: ‘O ‘Umar, do not urinate standing up.’ So I never urinated whilst standing after that.” —Sunan Ibn Majah 308
